Darrell P. Wheeler

Interim Provost, University at Albany

Darrell P. Wheeler was appointed the University at Albany’s Interim Provost in September 2016.

In July 2015, Wheeler joined University at Albany as both Dean of the School of Social Welfare and Vice Provost for Public Engagement, a new position aimed at advancing the University’s commitment to public engagement. He was previously Dean and Professor of the School of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago, and before that taught at Hunter College, Columbia University, the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of North Carolina.

Wheeler is an active scholar with interests including the identification and exploration of individual and communal resiliency in HIV prevention and intervention among African-American gay, bisexual and transgender communities. He is also active in the professional community and serves as the current President of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Social Workers. Additionally, he is a member of the Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council.

Wheeler, received his undergraduate degree from Cornell College, a master’s degree in social work from Howard University and both a master’s and Ph.D. in public health from the University of Pittsburgh.
