James R. Stellar

Interim President, University at Albany

James R. Stellar was named the University at Albany’s Interim President in September 2016. Prior to his appointment, he served as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

Before joining the University at Albany as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Stellar served at Queens College of the City of New York (CUNY) as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and then as Vice President for Academic Innovation and Experiential Education. In that post, he utilized experiential education to complement the classical classroom-based education integrating internships, service learning, undergraduate research, study abroad, and other programs to enhance student success in college and upon graduation.

Prior to joining CUNY, Stellar spent 22 years at Northeastern University in Boston, where he served for a decade as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences as well as Professor and Chair of Psychology and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs. He began his academic career at Harvard University serving eight years as assistant and then associate professor in the Department of Psychology and Social Relations, and as a neuroscience researcher at the McLean Hospital of Harvard Medical School.

Stellar earned his doctorate in Biological Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed his post-doctoral studies. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.
